JOHN adds: As I wrote last night, I think the immigration bill is dead on arrival. This morning’s Washington Times contains a pessimistic evaluation of the compromise’s prospects, titled "Illegals Deal Alienates Everyone." It includes this quote from Congressman Mike Pence:

I don’t believe the Senate bill has a future in the House.

For better or worse, I doubt whether there is any immigration bill that can command a majority of both the House and the Senate.

They do not support the bill. I do. But if John is right about this bill, it is a terrible indictment of our political class. Immigration is, for a variety of reasons, a serious issue. If our political leaders are simply incapable of addressing it, we need new leaders.
