I'm not sure where RudyBlogger gets the idea that Rudy "is more acceptable to conservatives."

That is true in some cases, and false in others.

As for a constituency that will fight - I think you will find that the blogosphere, while unable to raise the tens of million necessary, has ample perseverance, time, and dislike for McCain, that would be necessary for a candidate to keep up the fight through the summer.

Only problem here is that, if Romney is the only guy that can compete on the money issue, we're in trouble. an we honestly say that Romney can make it to the Convention if he does not win (or ome in a very very strong second) to McCain in both NH and MI? He's the local in NH and has a history in MI.

This dynamic of McCain dominating hiring/fundraising/endorsements while a bunch of also-rans fight for the scraps may work if Romney or Allen are his main competition. But it totally breaks down if Rudy runs, as he is technically speaking the actual frontrunner. Those who argue that McCain is inevitable are arguing against a straw man. McCain won't be Mr. Responsible & Electable facing off against a bunch of ideological firebrands. He'll have a co-frontrunner in the race with him, one who can raise just as much money, is more electable, and is more acceptable to conservatives. The necessity of "settling for" McCain will be no more.

And it's not just bloggers who will be after McCain. It will be a bunch of 527s that will start nipping at his heels in early '07. Think of what happens when these groups start spending millions on ads attacking McCain on immigration/"torture"/the G-14/taxes/CFR/ad nauseam. All while Rush Limbaugh keeps up the drumbeat on radio, to a willing audience of mainstream conservatives that already hates McCain's guts.

"New media" isn't just the blogosphere.

[...] But I do feel compelled to speak out about the counter-spin to the story offered by some of my fellow conservative bloggers. According to Eyeon08.com (which is quickly becoming one of my favorite blogs): What is so interesting about McCain being the frontrunner is that conservatives run around saying “It ain’t so” or “It won’t be so”. So how were they doing that? Well, today Matt Lewis (Human Events) said that McCain is fighting the last campaign … [...]
